4 child support issues to resolve this month

Did you know that August is recognized as Child Support Awareness Month in the U.S.? This month, states celebrate the various resources in place to help parents pay and collect child support, as well as the parents who work to support the needs and welfare of their children.

That is why this month offers the perfect opportunity for parents to address and resolve any child support issues that may be complicating life, including the four we examine below.

  • Unpaid child support: If you are a parent owed child support, you can take action to enforce support orders to collect payment. There are various methods of enforcing these orders, from garnishing the delinquent parent’s wages to holding him or her in contempt of court.
  • Modification of child support: If you are struggling to pay child support, it may be time to seek a modification of support if you have experienced substantial changes to your income, job or medical health recently.
  • Review of existing orders: It can be a good idea to review your child support from time to time, as things can change, including parents’ financial resources and the needs of your child.
  • Paternity orders: If you believe that you are not the biological father of a child, or if you would like to legally establish who the father of your child is, then a paternity test can be necessary. Once completed, these tests can inform everyone involved who has rights over a child and whether a person can be held financially responsible for that child.

In Florida, The Child Support Program can help parents secure these and other services related to the payment of child support.

However, if you have questions about your legal rights as a parent, navigating the complicated system or filing a legal claim, then it can be wise to consult an experienced family law attorney. Considering this month is all about recognizing, addressing and coping with child support issues, now could be the best time to settle any that remain unresolved.
